Event Description

San Francisco. A woman stands on a thin sheet of plywood. She wears a long blue-collared shirt and her legs are bare. You lock eyes with her, uncertain why she stands so still, her gaze unwavering. With time, you notice drops of blood forming small pools on the plywood. “Resist,” she whispers. “Resist.”

Sloughing is a durational performance, a social intervention, and a collective action. For 28 consecutive days, nasty women will menstruate onto plywood boards in order to counter the Trump Administration’s attempts to shame and silence us. ALL Women, Menstruating Gentlemen, Non-binary Bleeders, and Menopausal Madams & Gents deserve quality healthcare. Sloughing highlights our ability to sustain, endure, and support one another as we claim space for everyday acts of resistance.

Sloughing is part of 100 Days Action, a counter-narrative to Trump’s one hundred day plan.

About the Organizers

Raegan Truax is a durational performance artist who creates visceral, corporeal environments and takes breath, sweat, and skin as basic materials for works that exhaust, endure, and provoke the simultaneity of art and life.

Truax’s performances have been included within The Marina Abramovic Institute’s Immaterial archive and presented at Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik (ZKU) in Berlin, SOMarts in San Francisco, grüntaler9 in Berlin, The Northern California Performance Platform, Stanford University’s Department of Art and Architecture, Berlin Art Week, Performance Studies International, and Heizraum Concert Series in Berlin. She has additionally performed at Centro Negra with AADK in Blanca Spain, Dance Theatre Workshop in New York City, the Performance Arts Institute in San Francisco, and The New Museum in New York City as collaborator to Carlos Motta’s international art project “We Who Feel Differently.” More recently, Truax was commissioned to create a new performance, Footnote, for the annual conference of American Society for Theater Research, and has received a Project Space Residency at CounterPulse in San Francisco for Shift, a 50-day performance she will begin in 2018.
