About The Organizers

The Austin Academy of Burlesque was created in 2008 by Jigglewatt co-founder, Coco Lectric. Coco began at the request of fellow performers to assist with choreography and character development. Soon audiences and aspiring performers wanted to learn the art of the tease, too, and the school was founded.

In light of the current political climate, colleges and theaters across the country have staged readings and productions of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, known as “The Rhinoceros Project”. Rhinoceros is the story of how the people of a small town turn into rhinoceroses. The play confronts themes of fascism, mob mentality, and paranoia. In the Sommers room, we are staging this reading with the intent of exploring these themes further, and how to cope with and resist them. Following the reading, we will discuss the relevance of the play in the present, and what we can do to proceed with our rapidly changing government.

About the Event

SignStorm was an art installation intended as a peaceful act of resistance, a silent rally with signs instead of people.

On “Not My President’s Day” weekend, protest signs both new and used were laid out, flat, in the Circle of Palms Plaza next to the San Jose Museum of Art.

The purpose of this project was to provide an opportunity for everyone, regardless of their physical limits, to publicly express feelings about Trump as our president, our concerns about his chosen cabinet and administration, and fears for the resulting future of this country and our world.

About the Event

In solidarity with hundreds of performance artists and activists nationwide, on President’s Day, UC-Riverside students came together to participate in “Bad and Nasty.” The creativity in artistic expression ranged from poems, spoken word, and political limericks to short plays, show tunes, and feminist dance. We are so proud of our students for making their voices heard. Special thanks to the Theatre, Film, and Digital Production Department for supporting Dr. Patrice Amon, Dr. Donatella Galella, and Dr. Annika Speer in producing this collaborative event.

In the spirit of persistence and creative resistance, The Front cordially invites you to celebrate Not My President’s Day at The Front on Monday, February 20, 2017 6-8 pm. Held in conjunction with the Bad Hombres and Nasty Women Performance Network, a nation-wide informal umbrella organization of artists responding freely and through a variety of platforms to the recent and unfolding political events in our country and hosted in a spirit of creative catharsis and solidarity, Not My President’s Day at The Front is a one-time event featuring new and improvisational outdoor performances, actions, interactions, protests, costumes, placards, puppets, and wearable art by local artists. All are welcome. Attendees are also encouraged to come in costume, with and without placards, but none are required. Admission is free. Bring your political ids, your wit and satire, and spirit of collegiality. Our regular exhibitions will also be on view in the galleries.

Guest artists include: Shannon Stewart, Ellery Burton, Sierrah Dietz, Kimmie Allen & Rick Snow; Artemis Antippas; puppeteer Sierra Kay; Jason Childers and David Hassell; Perry Leopard; Bennett Kirschner and others.

These are images of the performance “Tableaux Vivantes!” by Jason Christopher Childers and David Hassell. In this participatory performance audience members are invited to choose from a set of hand made props and pose in protest in the green screen backdrop environment. The piece was accompanied by and abstract soundtrack of vague protests and chants.
